Due to the virtual absence of side effects, there are not many contraindications of yoga therapy. However, caution should be exercised in major physical illness like severe cardiovascular disability, spondylosis and bleeding ulcer when present. Caution is also suggested in patients with seizure disorder, hypochondriasis.
Meditation is not recommended in depression with suicidal ideations and psychosis. In such cases, some specific practices should be omitted.
Yogic practices that involve the use of rapid breathing have been found to precipitate an epileptic attack in individuals suffering from epilepsy (Lansky ,2006, Yardi, 2001).
Lack of motivation, and low intelligence reduce the success of yoga therapy (Singh, 2006).
